Agri-Biodegradable Mulch Films Derived from Lignin in Empty Fruit Bunches

Mulch films increase soil temperature, maintain moisture, improve water and fertilizer absorption, reduce weed growth. This work studied a mulching film made using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) lignin extracted from empty fruit bunches (EFBs). The mulch were investigated for opaqueness, biodegradation, water-solubility, mechanical properties. Life cycle assessment (LCA) cost estimate analysis conducted. composite film-PVA solution was blended with 6% EFB in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) five different amounts (0, 20, 40, 60, or 80 wt% lignin). results showed that increasing the amount of increased film’s solubility, moisture content, biodegradability. At same time, absorption tended to decrease. Consequently, light transmittance reduced, which had positive effect on preventing Tests properties 60% PVA highest tensile strength (16.293 MPa). According LCA studies estimation, lignin-mixed lowest impact cheaper than commercial film. suggested it is possible blend polymer biodegradability up 25.47% by burial 32% solubility.
